Today I have met a strange problem with ie6. When I type an address such as www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) and press enter, ie says the address cannot be found.
But when I type the same address with "http://" before www, ie6 connects without a glitch. My OS is WinME with ie6 sp1. I tried to reinstall ie6 without success.
You know in normal conditions, ie6 automatically adds "http://" before any address, but in my situation, I have to type "http://" before every address in order to connect . I tried in vain to find a setting in ie6.
I would be very grateful if you can save me from this misery.
Best regards,

I can only imagine this is the result of some spyware, I can't find an option to stop it adding http://, nor can I think of a reason why you might want to.
The downloads section here at CTH contains adaware and spybot, both are good for searching out and nasties on your machine.

Best regards,
Same thing is happening to me after installing SP2. Spybot has found no spyware. However, when I press the CONTROL key with ENTER, http://www. is added and IE6 goes to the site!

Problem: In the address bar of Internet Explorer, you have to type http:// before the www.cnn.com (http://www.cnn.com/) (for example) in order for the webpage to load. If you just type www.cnn.com (http://www.cnn.com/), you get an immediate error saying the website cannot be found.
Fix: Go into the Registry Editor...START/RUN...enter REGEDIT. This will open up the Registry file editor. Go to the the folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\URL\Prefixes
Be sure the ‘Data’ next to the ‘Name’ www is "http://" (see the screen capture below). If it is not, right click on that line and change it to be "http://".
NOTE: Sybot Spyware software ver 1.3 - latest detection updated 10/14/2004 - did not fix this problem.
My System: Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106, SP1 running on Windows ME.
I guess the screen capture isn't going to show up on here...sorry. This is my first post here and I'm not sure how to post an image yet...email me if you need the image.
