display settings work backwards

Hi

anybody ever hear of this before? the users settings were
set to 728/1024 she wanted her screen a little easier to read so I changed settings to 800/600 and actually made the display smaller this is in a dell latitude 640c with win 2k profession with a standard company image also deleted the display adapter and tried to reinstall it error message was adapter wasn't compatible with laptop
any ideas?
