98SE Problems

Have a Dell Latitude CPIa laptop running 98SE. Recently added all the Windows suggested fixes (Secuity Pack). Now I cannot shut down my laptop unless I disable both the Norton Virus and Norton Security programs. Then it will let me shut down normally most of the time. I could not find a way to correct this on the Microsoft web site though it did give me the suggestion to disable the Norton programs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I now find some of the software that worked perfectly before I added the fixes, no longer works. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing helped. Any suggestions? Would it help to upgrade to newer versions of the same software. One in particular, Rand McNally TripMaker, is really a favorite. I contacted the vendor on this but haven't heard anything.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carla

Not sure why you are having that problem, but I have seen similar problems with Norton Security. Perhaps you might like to dump that as suggested, Nortons AV should be OK. Perhaps you might like to install ZoneAlarm as your firewall. I'm running Win98SE I have all the security updates and ZA works fine for me I have an older version ZA2.6 You can get a free down load from http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10...part=zonealarm the older version is available from http://www.oldversion.com/

Good luck. BF
