Hi Folks
I have such a strange problem and I've spent the better part of the morning trying to solve with no luck whatsoever. I've been ftp-ing sites for years and never came across this. Today I updated a site and when I uploaded the page, then checked it online, I noticed that the banner didn't show up. Thinking that the transfer wasn't successful I transferred again. All the other changes appear on the page - but no banner. This is the page I'm talking about http://www.rollickingrichard.com. The top blank yellow area should actually be displaying a banner gif. Now here's the weird part. If I view the source from my ftp program (by the way I tried 4 different ftp programs, all same result) the snippet of code IS THERE! However, when you view the webpage, then view source, the snippet is MISSING!!!????

Does anyone have a clue what might be going on here. It's driving absolutely nuts. I recently bought a new computer running Windows XP SP1. I didn't think this should have anything to do with it. Is this a server issue? I've contacted their (1and1.com) tech support and have yet to hear a reply.

Please help!
Thanks so much
Sonja

Welcome :)

Clear your Temporary Internet files and use CTRL+Refresh to download the latest version of the page.

If you still have problems then delete the file from the server and load the URL into your browser.
After you get the 404 error you can then upload the file and load it to get the latest version.

Hi Degsy

Thanks for replying. I cleared the cache previous to posting and found that didn't help. I also had deleted the file on the server and then reuploaded. Still no help. I did follow your instructions but no joy. :(

I find it really odd that the server source file shows the image in the table, though the source file for the page doesn't...

The file will probably be in your ISP's cache.

If you still have problems then delete the file from the server and load the URL into your browser.
After you get the 404 error you can then upload the file and load it to get the latest version.

ok sorry, you've lost me there. I got a 403 message after i deleted the file and checked through browser. So I don't think it's a cache problem

You should get a 404 Page Not Found error or a 403 error.

Now upload the file and use CTRL+REFRESH to make sure that you are getting the latest version.

Have you tried in a different browser?

hiya
yes I did all that before (deleted file, cleared cache, got 403 error, uploaded file, refreshed still have same problem. I tried Netscape only but it's the same thing (no banner gif). I really don't think it's a cache issue. It seems more a server problem, but I don't know alot about servers so I don't know where to start.

i'm still guessing that it is a problem with your ISP's cache.
You will have to wait for it to refresh.

Have you tried uploading the page with a different name?

well the problem is affecting all the pages on the site that use that banner image...

do you mean my hosting company's cache?

i still don't know how that would account for the snippet of code actually being removed from the final page that's viewed online...

Your ISP is your Internet Service Provider.
Usually they have a storage of pages to help speed up browsing.

Can you post the code that is missing because the banner seems to be working for me.

Also, do you have a Firewall, Web Filter or Internet Security software installed that may block certain code or images?

omg i wonder if that's it? the filters...i didn't set them that way, but let me check since I just recently upgraded my Norton Internet Security...the banner should say Rollicking Richard Sullivan in a funky font done in a wave...i'm gonna check my NIS now...thanks for the tip! Crossing my fingers!

Wow...do I ever feel like a complete (make that COMPLETE) moron! It was the ad blocker. I guess it was a default setting and I didn't even notice. Well one really good thing came out of this. I'm renaming any file called "banner" asap since it obviously blocks that. Thanks so much for your patience and help

Thank you for this fix as well! I've fallen foul of the same problem and spent the last couple of evenings thinking that something was wrong with my web site. Found this solution via Google
