Is it possible to install a faster processor and a combo drive in a slot load Imac G3 indigo? I have plenty of memory in already.

There seems to be very little (nada!) on the web about this

:dizzy:

Not sure about iMacs, Ed. You can try http://sonnettech.com/product/cpu_upgrades.html and poke around. There are other companies making processor upgrades but Sonnet is top of the line, if they dont' make it, it probably doesn't exist.

Edit... it looks like there's only one iMac processor upgrade here http://sonnettech.com/product/harmoni_g3.html

But I don't think you've got an iMac that is on the list of supported Macs. You may be out of luck with the processor upgrade. Sorry.

iMacs aren't generally built to be upgraded in this way they are meant to be the all-in-one-toss-it-away-and-get-a-better-one machine.

Do you think this combo drive will work in a indigo G3 400 slot loader? Is there enough "system" to handle the tasks with 384 megs?

Or how about this:

They want 350 bux for this litlle gizmo, and it says it runs on a G3....(?)

The processor upgrade may be out of the question.

hard to tell Ed.

Apple builds it's application (iMovie, iTunes, iDVD, ietc.) to work with only particular drives. Both those pages don't detail who the manufacturer is and what the actual drive is (Like a Pioneer DVR-106D [standard Apple superdrive]) so it's hard to tell if they would be good purchases. If you get a drive not supporte dby Apple software, it will still work, you just won't be able to burn from ANY Apple application. You'll have to use Toast or some other burning software (Toast is an excellent app).

My first question to both manufacturers would be what brand is the drive. Then I'd check it against a list of Apple supported brands. If you need help finding that, let me know. If it's a Pioneer 106 or greater, grab it, it will work flawlessly.

If I had a gun to my head and was forced to pick between your two links just as they are, I'd choose the top one. The addition of all the goofy software in the second link only serves to make me even more confident that it doesn't support Apple software. After all if you've got iMovie and iDVD why would you need another movie burning application? Not to mention that the bottom link only has a DVD burning speed of 2x. Any decent drive anymore has a 4x DVD burn.
