my friend has a MAC with OS9.1 installed. He recently bought an Epson C62 printer replacing his old HP Deskjet 690C. he went into the Extension Manager and turned off the HP printer because he could not print to the new Epson. after removal (he un-x'd the HP reference) he was able to print. after a while though, he began getting an error message saying "MAC could not access the Deskjet 650 because driver HP Deskjet is not in the extension folder". If he clicks ok (twice), the underlying window for the Epson C62 comes alive and he can print by clicking the start print queue button. unfortunately, this is a pain in the butt since he cannot go directly to the printer via the print command.
should he have removed/uninstalled something else? If so, what and where is this other thing located?
We looked into the Extension Manager and found NO reference at all on HP Printer.
I'm not a MAC user but often I can help him by comparing Windows similarities. if this were a windows system i'd uninstall the printer from the hardware manager and then go to the registry and remove HP references if that were not enough. is there a similar thing in a MAC?
Any help is greatly appreciated. :(

Go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner, select "Chooser" and be certain the Epson is chosen there. Sounds to me like you've still got the Mac thinking there's an HP to use. Setting the correct printer in the chooser should fix that.

On a side note, OS9.1 has bugs. I'd upgrade to OS9.2 at least.

Hi again, Buzz.

Went to "Chooser" and only two items were listed: Epson C62 printer and AppleShare(?)...no HP listing.
I did however find HP listings in the System Utilities folder...so I suspect that my buddy did not "uninstall" the HP printer completely. Is there an "uninstall" routine within the MAC OS? If so, how do I get to it and launch it for the non-existent HP printer?
By the way, the Epson printer is connectd to the MAC via a USB cable. When I go into the Extension Manager, I don't see the Epson at all but there is a USB shared printer line identified. Unfortunately, I have no idea how the HP 650 was connected to the MAC, and my friend does not know.
Suffice it to say, the "you cannot use the desktop printer Deskjet 650. .etc ..etc.." error statement still appears every time he boots up the system. Help!
