View Full Version : remove aborted XP install from ME

Recently an associate brought me their PC to see if I could "fix it". Investigation showed that this machine and it's owner should get a gold medal for the most abused system ever -- 73 different viruses, 900+ spyware/malware etc and an aborted XP Home installation.

I have solved all of the problems with one exception and it is driving me crazy -- when booting the default automatically attempts to restart the aborted XP install. Boot.ini does not look like the standard XP boot.ini -- it looks more like the standard win98SE boot.ini. To prevent further problems with the aborted install, I have relocated the hidden $NT...$ folder so that the system just halts and the user can then select the Window ME startup (in case they missed it when it first started).

My question is "how do you get rid of the aborted installation of XP Home?"

I can not find anything in the registry that looks like it might be causing it. Any help would be appreciated. (BTW M$ search was less than helpful)
