I bought a used desktop at a dotcom bankruptcy auction as it has better hardware than my present machine , but it has NT installed and I only use my computer for home web surfing with dial-up. I would like to uninstall NT and install Win 98 . I can't even get to desktop on the NT machine as it is password protected.I found this on another web page :

"Subject: Re: Trying To Uninstall Windows NT

Check out www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com/) for the tools and tutorials you'll need to wipe out the hard drive (you'll lose all content, of course) and install a garden variety operating system.

We urge you to go with Windows 98 Second Edition, if that's an option. Good luck!"

Which utilities does bootdisk.com provide for this ? (bootdisk e-mail says no tech questions and points to this forum) . I have also read of a conflict with file systems that has to be resolved between the 2 systems , do any of the bootdisk utilities provide for this ?

I don't mind at all if I lose all the programs presently on the NT machine (whatever they are !) as long as I can install my home programs and use them on this machine .

Thanks for any advice you can give .

Welcome to CTH

NT uses the NTFS partition while Windows 98 uses a FAT partition.

The easiest way is to use one of the bootdisk from bootdisk.com (Win 98), reboot the compter and it should take you to the A:/> prompt.

Now type the following:

fdisk (hit <enter>)

Say YES to the prompts

Now select Delete a non-dos partition, follow the prompts

Now select Create a primary DOS partition, follow the prompts

When done hit escape key and it will end up at the A:\prompt

Now youcan format the drive and install Win 98.

I have a poage on Partitioning (http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/fdisk.htm)

And one on Formatting (http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/format.htm)

From bootdisk.com I recommend the file [b]Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive [b] (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm)

Download the file, then double click on the file (do not put this file on a floppy), have a clean floppy in and it will expand the bootfiles onto the floppy.

Thanks for this advice Murf . I will try it this weekend .I'll let you know if it works . If anyone else has any tips or has tried this (google shows several boards where this has been discussed) please let me know if you were successful.
