Hi, probably a really stupid and simple question but how do I know if my USB ports are 2.0? I have opened Device Manager and expanded the Universal Serial Bus section, it tells me i have 'VIA Tech 3038 PCI Universal Host Controller' can anyone tell me if this is 2.0. - If it isnt and I purchase an external hard drive telling me it is USB 2.0, will it still work on my PC??

Thank-you in advance

Hi,

How old is the computer? I think USB 2 was avilable from round the Intel P3 and P4 computers years.

Also I think if you access Device Manager, click the + next to Uinversal Serial Bus controllers, if there is USB 2.0 Enhanced Open Host Controller there then you have USB 2.0, but dont hold me on that.

You can also find out by downloading and runnin Sisoft Sandra, this will tell you which version you have.

Also some USB 2.0 are compatible with 1.1

Hope this helps

It will usually say USB2.0 in device manager.

USB1.1 devices will usually work, but check the specs just in case.
Obvisouly it will be slower and you would be best off purchasing a PCI USB2 card.
