Here is the problem. When I start my computer, just before the icons appear on the desktop, my modem starts dialing automatically. It sounds as if it dials up twice. Then, when I attempt to dial up myself, I get a message that the modem is already in use by another program or that the port is already open. I have been getting around this by going to the dial-up networking folder and disconnecting as soon as I turn on the computer. The problem began about a month ago and my computer has been locking up and running slower than normal ever since. In general, everything seems to have gone downhill. Also, solitaire and minesweeper don't work anymore.

I have run spybot and adaware with no success. I tried using system restore, but I never could get it to run. On some of the other threads, I saw Highjack was mentioned, so I downloaded it and ran it. However, I'm clueless as to what it does or how to translate the results. I do not have a fax machine so that is not the problem.

Any ideas?

Who is your Internet Service Provider?
AOL has a option to dial out as soon as windows boots up, if you're using AOL, try to right-click on the AOL icon that is by the System clock [lower right hand side] and disable it from the connections options.

there is currently a scam going on regarding this. what happens is that your computer dials up to the internet to your service provider. then your computer dials up again to a premium rate number where you are charged. i would suspect that this would be the issue with yourself although i am not entirely sure. i would advise you to check your telephone bill for any really expensive calls that you know you didn't make. then run a full virus scan on your computer to scan it for any viruses. uninstall and reinstall your modem driver. failing that, contact your ISP and inform them of your situation

I should be getting a phone bill in the mail any day now so I'll check that out. My ISP is Juno. If none of your other tips work, I'll give them a call. Thanks for the help!
