I have a cable connection and my roommate is getting a computer. We want to share the connection, but do not want to network. Can we do this? One is a PC, the other is a mac, there may also be a third laptop that connects sometimes. Thanks.

I think you would probably need to set up a hub with cables to the second computer, in order for the second computer to be able to "read" the cable modem!!
We have two computers set up with one cable modem, and we tried our hardest to set up a network. We had so much trouble and hassle with it, that we gave up, and called the cable company, who gace us a second IP address (for the second PC), and they now charge us $10 per month extra.
If you can get a Network set up, this would save that extra monthly charge, but be aware that if there's ever any problems with the cable, IP address etc, and you have to resort to calling the cable company. If you have to also tell them that you have a network set up, they will more than likely blame the network for the problem, and so will not be too willing to help you!!

Hope this helps.

Please let us know how things turn out.

Dave.

Hi,

You can connect two computers togeather directly without a hub with a patch cable, but you should run win98se or higher. Each computer will need to have a network interface card (NIC).

If you are going to use 3 or more computers to share the cable modem you'll need to use a hub, or better yet a router from Linksys. You won't need win98se or higher for this setup, win95 works but you'll neeed a proxy like Sygate to share the modem.

For better understanding of all this go to www.linksys.com (http://www.linksys.com) or www.sygate.com (http://www.sygate.com) for how to do it.

Have fun, it's a blast. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks alot, I appreciate it. I actually have a "soho-hub" that someone gave me, so I hope that will work. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Will I need to run any software for this setup to work? Will there be a PC/mac problem? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/redface.gif

Thanks again!!

win98se will handle the sharing without a proxy if it is setup right, such as with DSL etc... Otherwise, you will need to use a proxy such as Sygate.

If you will take the time and check out the Linksys and Sygate web sites you will learn tons on this type of system.

There are different ways to setup internet sharing depending on what kind of access you use, such as, cable, DSL, ISDN, T3 or just plain ol' analog.
