Boot to floppy drive
Hi,
A lot of good stuff on your forum. A lot of stuff to read through. Last week I installed a new primary drive, nice and quiet but my PC is now running slow. After spending a week, wondering what I did wrong on the install, I just learned today about acoustic sound management. What a rip in my opion my drive set to run slower, I'm just finding out I wished I could charge Maxtor for my time wasted. Enough of that sad story, I found the Maxtor software to adjust the drive settings but do not know how to create a "clean boot disk to the A:" as Maxtor puts it. I read a lot on the web on creating a boot from floppy but all I'm found are going to send me into windows. This is from Maxtor site " PROCEDURE FOR USING AMSET.EXE: 1. Using a system boot diskette clean-boot the system to an A: prompt. 2. Remove the system boot diskette and insert the diskette containing the AMSET.EXE and CHIPSET.DRV files." So please, how can I boot just to the floppy drive. I do have the Bios set to go to the floppy first. Thanks EdwardA Last edited by EdwardA; September 11th, 2004 at 05:07 AM. Reason: misspell |

Howdy and welcome to CTH
:If you have BIOS set to boot to a: drive as the first boot device, just put your boot floppy in and start your system.. QWhen you get to a:> prompt, you are there !!! Murray |

Found out how to stay at A:
OK, I figgered out to boot A:, The idea came to me while mowing the lawn (guess I'll move the PC outside).
I remembered I have the Maxtor MAXBLAST software on floppy and it runs on the A: drive after rebooting so, I rebooted with that disk in. At the user agreement I selected decline. This takes out of the program and to the "C:" prompt. Changed to A: installed the floppy with the "setam" program on it and changed to am /off. I did notice a performance gain but, not as much as I had hoped for. I tried PC Pitstop again, and again the drive performance is low (about a 3rd of what it should be). I downloaded Maxtor's PowerMax program and the drive hangs up at the quick 90 second test. I left it there for over 5 minutes it never exited so I rebooted and tried again, same thing! I had this drive as a back up for a while so I never knew it was bad. I know to check all drives now. Anyway, were off to get a new drive to day. I hope the transfer go OK. I check for any tips when I get back. Thanks EdwardA
