I am at my end with this problem. I have read all of the other posts regarding scandisk and defrag problems and nothing has worked.
In WINME I run scandisk and it keeps restarting and I get the error regarding restarting 10x. I have nothing else running except explorer. I boot into safe mode and I still get the same error.
I booted up from the startup disk and during scandisk it gets to 99% finished during the directory structure check before the error comes up "Scandisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it. To fix this problem run scandisk for windows." I then continued and did a surface scan and no errors were found, no bad sectors. I did this several times and it still returns the error after 99%.
I have the program SMART Defender to check the health of my drive and it was fine. I also ran the Drive Fitness Test that I got from IBM(the maker of my drive) and it also said the drive was fine. I have gone back into windows and I still get the 10x error.
When I try to run defrag it says that the drive has errors and to run scandisk to fix them. I have also run Spysweeper and Ad aware to get rid of anything else. The screensaver is set to none.
I just keep going in circles with this. Please, Please, any and all help would be most appreciated. I do not want to have to reload windows.
Thanks for any help.

Have you shut down your firewall and antivirus?I had wondered about the firewall in my router and when I had been researching this problem I read a suggestion about unplugging the cat5. I tried that before I posted for help but it wouldn't work. After I read your post I unplugged the cat5 and scandisk finally worked. It found errors and fixed them all. I tried to run scandisk again but then it kept restarting. I then ran defrag which worked. I tried scandisk several more times but it still keeps restarting. At least it worked once. There must be something else wrong because lately my computer has locked up much more than usual. When I get some extra money I will upgrade everything along with WINXP.
Thanks for the help.

Glad you got ScanDisk to work at least once! Though I can't understand why it was only once

When I said Firewall and Antivirus, I actually meant on your computer, didn't realise you were running through a router, so I'm a little out of my depth here, not knowing anything about routers

All I can say is have you checked your computer for a firewall?

This may not help, but have you thought about upgrading to XP? This probably does not help you but it is probably well more worth your time to upgrade.

The cat5 is a cable that can be used to connect a computer to a LAN. My cat5 connects my NIC to my router. The data flows through this cable.

1st delete scandisk.log in root of boot drive,

have ME boot floppy,

boot from floppy, option 4 , basic start

run scandisk from the A:\ prompt,,

then reboot machine as normal

normally works everytime I do it
