Hi,
I wonder:
- in a peer to peer network with one puter="A"(with 2 NIC's)constantly on and running Internet Connection Sharing, and another "inside" puter="B".
- "A" is never running a browser, I even took the screen off.
- I am told hackers cannot see "B"
because it is not directly connected to the bad outside world.
- I get my inside IP-adress from "A"(DHCP for WINS).
- I have a cable modem.
Do I need a firewall, and if I do: where do I need it?
Stupid question? Then give me a stupid answer. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
Thanx.

Hi there,
If you are on cable, you need a firewall. If a hacker can see your computer it can see the others too. Better safe than sorry.
I have run Sygate for 2 years now. It is a VERY good program. I do not have any relationship with them other than using their product.
Check out: www.sygate.com (http://www.sygate.com)

Junky,
I currently use Zonealarm (like everybody else? ) on "B" and never had an alarm.
I tried "Shields up" from grc.com, with and without Zonealarm loaded: no difference at all...
Downloaded and ran "Leaktest", with and without Zonealarm, no difference.
What should I think now?

It is my understanding that Zone Alarm can only be used with a network, if you have the "pro" version.

mounoi,
I don't know about other firewalls, only Sygate...that's all I've ever used. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Sygate has either just a firewall program, or you can get the Proxy program which allows for internet sharing with all computers on the LAN as well as working as a firewall.
I've tested my Sygate several times on the internet for fun and it always rates Stealth. So if you want the best of both worlds use Sygate.
As far as people looking or hacking a computer on the LAN, if you turn off "sharing" it is next to impossible for anyone to hack or peek...at least for the average person. If a person is good enough they can hack anything. But if they are that good they won't be fooling with the little guy like you and me. They'll be after bigger fish. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
