I had a perfectly running W98SE2 system unitl I installed an ethernet card. After rebooting from the driver install I got a msg box "Msmsgs: This program has performed and illegal operation" etc. My dialer works but anytime I start Outlook Express or IE5 they crash. I suspect that somehow the IP drivers/stack/whatever has gotton corrupted by the LAN card driver install. Nothing I do seems to fix the problem including removing and reinstalling all the network protocols and devices. Any ideas? tnx -- Doug

AOpen AON-325. It's a PCI Fast Ethernet card.

Do you have Microsoft Instant Messanger on the system. Msmsgs is associated with that program. Disable it on startup and see if you still get the message.
Also when you start Outlook Express it will load Instant messanger. That is whats causing the problem with it.

Thanks for your reply. However, the fact that MS Messenger craps out is not the problem. The problem is that ALL applications that connect through IP crap out. Even after re-installing Windows. Even after removing all communications components and re-installing them. It's a complete mystery to me how installing a lan card can permanantly destroy IP. Even after a complete re-install!!

Did you ever try a different NIC? If not, maybe that would be a good idea. The NIC you have now may be bad. Something new does not guarantee that it is good or will work right. And something used...

The NIC is fine. I built a new system in another partition (ME) and now run everything there, including the Internet Connection Sharing server over the network. I still have the old system in a hidden partition hoping that I'll find the solution to its problem. This has happened before - but I never figured it out then either.

Ah, I see. I'm a lot the same way. Once something goes wrong with one of these computers, I do what ever it takes to find out what the problem is or was. Happy hunting. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
