I have two computers, both with 100Mbps LAN cards (set to autodetect for speed and such), and a 10/100 autosensing hub. The problem is that sometimes the transfer is incredibly slow. I installed another 10/100 card in a friend's comp, and when he brings it over the transfer between Comp1 and his computer is great... But between Comp1 and Comp2 is terrible sometimes. I know it's not the cables, or the hub. The only thing I can think of is that Comp2 is hosed, but it'll even happen immediately after booting up, when other programs haven't loaded yet. (Besides a few system tray programs, but they're not really memoring hogging, so I don't think that's the cause.)

Comp1
-----
433MHz Pentium 2 Celeron
128MB RAM
10/100Mbps 3com Etherlink XL PCI (same as in friend's comp.)

Comp2
-----
333Mhz AMD K6-2
128MB RAM
10/100Mbps IBM card

Hi,

Have you tried switching ports on the hub to see if there might be a bad one?

Do you have the Cat5 cables coiled up? If so, that's a bad idea.

Do you have the cables running over or next to something with a high electrical charge? If so, that's a bad idea.

Have you tried moving the NIC to a different slot on the motherboard? Not all motherboard are made equal. There could be a bad slot.

By chance do you need to apply a PCI Bridge patch to the motherboard? Are there any patches that need to be installed for the motherboard. It or they will come from the manufacturer of the motherboard.

Even though you say the cables are fine, have you tried a different one anyway? You should.

If it ain't broke, break it...then fix it!
