Is there any way to connect my laptop ethernet card into my ethernet card on my other computer and have it work? I've tried it in the past, but the laptop's ethernet card refuses to turn on while its trying to ping.

I believe you need to get yourself a small hub, Linksys makes a nice 5 port that is ideal for home use. This should allow you to connect the 2 computers. It worked for me when we had Cable internet access.

If you're only connecting two computers, you don't have to use a hub. Instead, use a cross-over cable between the two systems.

If you do decide to add a third computer to your network later, purchase a hub and three straight-through (aka patch) cables - set the cross-over cable on the shelf. Hook each computer directly to the hub using the patch cable and you'll be up and running in no time.
