View Full Version : ECP vs EPP parallel port settings

I'm running Windows ME on a Cyrix 166 with 64 MB RAM. I've got a network at home with another computer, based on Windows networking. I'm also running Internet Connection Sharing with the other computer, sharing my DSL line.

My problem began when I set up a new printer--an HP832C inkjet. It requires that the parallel port be set to ECP mode instead of the EPP mode that I previously had set up.

As soon as I reset my BIOS to LPT1=ECP, my home network went dead, my Internet Connection Sharing failed to work, and my mouse started to freeze for five or ten seconds every minute or so.

I reset my printer port to EPP and all the problems went away. I looked at my System settings in the control panel and the only thing I noticed was that ECP used DMA 03 and EPP didn't use DMA at all. They both use the same interrupt and I think the memory address is the same. I don't know if any of this is significant.

What's the difference between ECP and EPP? Are there any workarounds to this problem? It would be nice to be able to use this ECP printer.
