View Full Version : Clean install of ME hangs on setting up hardware

I bought a new system yesterday, with no OS installed. I have disks from Win98 and WinMe, so I decided not to pay extra for WinXP.

I first installed '95 and when it came to Hardware Detection, the system froze the first three times I tried. After the third time, it seemed to continue past that part of the install, but never did ask me for my time zone info, etc. Win would only start in Safe Mode.

Like a desperate idiot, I assumed it was due to a problem with the size of my HD and an incompatibility with '95. So I formatted the drive and did a clean install of WinME. Now, it's freezing at the same point. UGH!!!

I bought this new system specifically so I could play the Sims 2 and I've spent many hours messing with it today and not one minute playing my new game. I'm beyond frustated!!

My system stats are:

3000+ AMD Athlon 64
512 MB 400 MHz DDR RAM
80 GIG 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive, 8 MB Buffer
128 MB GeForce FX5200 Video Card

I would be SO grateful for any advice you all could offer. :upset:

TIA!

windows 98/me maximum size of Hdisk is only 32gig.. you technically need XP or windows 2000 installed.. though its possbile if you have the right patch (see hdisk manufacturer) to get over the 32gig limit on ME like me :P

i had a maxtor 40gig but it wouldnt recognise on my p2 with ME till i got the patch from maxtor's official page :)
