hi, hows it goin?
I am sick of Win Me and want to change to windows XP. Now i have a CD for Win XP. It says "including service pack 1". could someone explain to me what this means?
What do i have to do to switch from Me to XP and still have all my previous data, would formating my hard drive be an option?
If anyone knows of a web page or has a link to a related article could you please post it.
Thanks in advance,
Duffy.

Hi,
If you format you will loose all your current data.
You should be able to upgrade XP over ME, but I wouldn't recommend it as you can take problems from ME over to XP.
Service Pack 1 is an upgrade for XP including Updates & patches etc.

That is a good work around.
You should backup your data anyway :)

hi degsy,
so do you think it will get rid of the errors on my pc?
does formatting my hard drive mean i can get back all the origanal memory i used, will it be like when i first got it?
Another thing, the cd came from a friend, from his new computer. will this work?
thanks

Hi
As degsy said, formatting it means wipe off all contents of yr hdd hence all is lost, and you start from scratch...now if you are reffering to yr cd drive of course it will work...if again you mean that you borrow a "cd"from yr friend ,if you mean an xp cdthen is a different story...this is a bit touchy and if a moderator reads this it can take it from where I left it

I never recommend upgrading. Too many weirdness and bloat left behind.
Definitely go with formatting your hard drive.
But back up anything you care to keep!
My Documents, Favorites, and search around the hard drive to see if anything else was left behind.
If you have nothing to back up to - get something!
CD Burner, DVD Burner, External Hard Drive, anything!
As far as the CD - I believe any CD will work, but you need your own key!
Meaning you need to have your own license for it (buy it).
And when you do - I recommend the full version, not an "upgrade".
Service Pack 1 just means it already has a Service Pack pre-installed that you'd normally have to download. But you have to download a service pack anyway because we're up to Service Pack 2. :p
Unofficially there are ways around it - but you will only shoot yourself in the foot as it will not be able to repair itself. I strongly recommend buying your own. It's not THAT expensive. Especially if buying it with other hardware.
