I just got my hands on an old Dell Latitude laptop that runs Windows 95 (4.00.950). It's a 486 with about 500 mb and a floppy drive.
It will not boot to Windows 95, but gives the following error message: "This version of Windows does not run on MS-DOS 7.00 or earlier". I have also gotten the message that the file "Win.com" is missing. I downloaded a Win95 bootdisk from bootdisk.com, but when I try to boot from it, I get a message about a CD-ROM drive not being found, or a drive being identified as "BANANA". How can I get this bootdisk to work? I have no cd-rom and therefore, the computer shouldn't be getting hung up on trying to identify its drivers, right? Please help! Jared |

Hi and welcome to CyberTechHelp.
You shouldn't need a CD driver to fix this problem. What you do need is the right Windows bootdisk. Boot with the one you've got. From The A:> prompt you need to change to the Windows directory. Type CD C:\Windows\System [ENTER] Type dir gui.exe [ENTER] You should see a description of the file with a datestamp. File time: 11-Jul-1995 9:50am = Windows 95 first edition File date: 24-Aug-1996 11:11am = Windows 95 OSR2 (Windows 95 B) File date: 19-Oct-1998 3:00pm (or later) = Windows 95 OSR2.5 (Windows 95 C) Whichever version you have, download a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com that corresponds. Boot with that disk and from the A:> prompt type sys c: [ENTER] You should get a message "system transferred" Remove the bootdisk and reboot.

Oh, really?
OK, give me a little while - I'll have to dig out and connect up a Win95 system to double-check which file you should be checking for.

Ok, just try a dir /p to list all files in Windows/System
You'll see the timestamp on most of the files.
