Hello
I know nothing about downloading music and would be happy to continue in such ignorant bliss, but I am cleaning up a puter at the moment and i know the minute I return it, kazaa will be put back on it. What application is 'safest' for downloading music. I want to keep the PC reasonably clean, but still allow the kids to download music. Can anyone make any recommendations PLEASE?

Not only are Kazaa and the like mostly used for downloading illegal material, but you also take the high risk of infection.
If you want to download music then look to the legal channels.
If not, you can't really ask for help at CTH :)

Ok, what are legal channels? I know nothing, at all, whatsoever about downloading music. Can you clue me in? I buy CDs and play them in a player. That is not what kids do, so how can they do it legally and safely I guess is what I want to know. I do know what is appropriate to ask help for, and would not ask help for something illegal.

At the least let the kids understand that by doing this, they may well be putting their parents at risk..........and maybe suggesting to the parents what the computer is being used for. :(

Napster is now a legal downloading service.
There are also other companies such as ITunes and many online music stores will allow you to download music.
This is all pay for, ofcourse.
We can't recommend or help with illegal downloading of music the same as we cannot recommend illegal downloading of software.

Hello? I know, I'm not asking for help in illegal downloading so please stop saying that, thank you. So there is no legal music downloading then? All I need is a simple yes or no :) Before I return this computer to it's owner I need to explain why I didn't load downloading software.
PS burger kind is offering some kind of music download so what is that all about?

I just ran Google for "legal music downloads", I can't vouch for any of them, but it may be worth having a look....

erm, I listed two above.
Usually, you do not get legal downloads via Kazaa and similar programs.

Thank you, now I can contact the owner and ask if they want me to set them up with a legal service. I missed your post about the services, sorry. :( I do see it now

Sorry, the parents aren't willing to pay for any so I just explained that they needed to check to be sure the kids didn't download Kazaa again. If I hear of something, though I will let you know!

It is tough paying for music when you can get it for free with all the additional nasties that comes with it. You may want to show those parents articles where other parents are paying 3k-15k dollars for downloading music using Kaaza.

Took me almost 2 days to get everything cleaned up, and the hjt log shows very clean, but I know there is something sinister left....but I've not yet figured it out and they needed it back. I explained what they would have had to pay to get their computer cleaned up if they had taken it some where else, because of kazaa nasties, hopefully they will really monitor the kids closer, so they don't download it again.
I have no idea how to even use Kazaa, itunes and whatever else, Launch radio works well for listening to music, I don't need to download it.

Someone had given me this link before, and I downloaded it and didn't know how to use it, but maybe jenn can and then explain it to me. Or, no, I think it was my firewall that was stopping me.

Can someone please explain as to how WinMX can be a legal site, compared to Kazaa?

Even Kazaa can be use legally to download legal music if you want to put with the nonsense that comes with it. As with any other p2p software, it is abused. WinMX can also be abused and when you download (stealing in some cases) free music, you are still taking a chance of getting nasties just like you do with Kazaa. The only real difference between the two is you do not initally get spyware when installing WinMX.

I understand that, but I guess I was meaning that WinMx isn't totally legal, just like all other P2P programs. :)

I'm about to close this one but let me just finish that by stating my position:
P2P software is perfectly legal.
Use of P2P software to infringe copyright is completely illegal.
If P2P software is illegal, then so is CD/DVD ripping and buring software.
Saying P2P software is illegal is like saying cars are illegal because people can use them to commit crimes.
