Need Help in Connecting two Computers via crossover cable

Hello,

I need some help in getting my two computers to talk to each other via a crossover cable. Internet does not matter, I just need them to connect to each other in order to share files. I have gone through the windows wizard on both my XP laptop and on my XP desktop, but that seems to do nothing. I also have a hub (not a router) to connect the two together so I can have internet on both. I am frustrated. Any suggestions?

Welcome

Can you see each PC?

You may need to disable firewalls initially to get it setup.
You may also need to add a same user account name to each PC for the OS to allow Permission to access files.

Basic Networking

OK do the Following

Cross Over Cable

Right Click on Connection (Open)
Right Click on LAN Connector (Properties)
Right Click on TCPIP (Properties)

PC1
TCPIP Address - 192.168.0.9
TCPIP Submask - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - 192.168.0.1 (What ever your Internet Router is)

PC2
TCPIP Address - 192.168.0.8
TCPIP Submask - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - 192.168.0.1 (What ever your Internet Router is)

OK now goto to My Computer Right Click (Properties)
Now goto computer Name make sure both Computers Match

PC1 - Computer1 (Name)
- Workgroup (Microsoft Workgroup name)

PC2 - Computer2 (Name)
- Workgroup (Microsoft Workgroup name)

Now save both setting and reboot The above will work with cross over or via a router. Note with a router you can not use the cross over cable.

Regards

If you are using a crossover cable you do not need a hub or router or anything, just simply plug the crossover cable into each machine

make sure you have the same workgroup name, and that you have have files shared
