1) What are the drawbacks of having two computers networked together using a simple ethernet hub but NOT joining them to the same domain or workgroup? I can see domain wise it would be easier to have one login that has admin rights on both boxes so you don't have to keep supplying a password each time you connect to a resource. But will NOT joining two machines to the same workgroup hamper their ability to communicate w/each other in any way? (assume of course both are static IPs on the same subnet).

Also, is it possible to have one machine be a DHCP server and point the other one to it for an IP address in the same scenario where both are their own workgroup? THANKS GUYS!

**The two machines will not be able to "see" each other.

I can see domain wise it would be easier to have one login that has admin rights on both boxes so you don't have to keep supplying a password each time you connect to a resource.

**I think you have the option to have a LAN with or without logins and passwords. I do.

But will NOT joining two machines to the same workgroup hamper their ability to communicate w/each other in any way? (assume of course both are static IPs on the same subnet).

**For each computer to see each other they need to be on the same Work Group.

Also, is it possible to have one machine be a DHCP server and point the other one to it for an IP address in the same scenario where both are their own workgroup? THANKS GUYS!

**I'm not sure on this one, but I don't think so. Back to the same situation of same work group. But then again...

I'm no expert, just what little I know from setting up three LAN's. One LAN with 4 computers, the other two LAN's with 2 computers each.

Thanks Junky! Just to clarify, when you see they won't be able to "see" each other...do you mean netBIOS names or also IPs? Meaning, if i have two win2k boxes in different workgroups on the same LAN, which of the following will work?

1) Pinging both machines (im assuming this will work if I use their IPs, but not their names)
2) sharing out resources and then mapping to each machine using their IP addresses.

The best I understand it, which ain't much, is that you can ping, but not share.

I haven't had the time, but I'd think that this would be covered on some web site somewhere. Would need to do some searching.

Sorry I can't be of more help, my experences are limited with this. :(
