Hello,

I am making my first network in my home. I have 2 computers I would like to network together on the same DSL Connection. One of the computers is running Windows 98 and the other is running Windows XP. The router I have bought is a "SMC Networks Cable/DSL Broadband Router - Model Number - SMC7004VBR-CA. My modem is a " Effecient Networks - SpeedStream 5200". The modem has a USB and an Ethernet port, it is possible to use either and at the moment I am using the USB port to run it.

Here is my problem: I can hook up my modem with my newer or older computer with no problem (USB Connector) but when I attach the modem to the router the internet gets cut off and does not work. The router uses Ethernet cords and I have all of the cords I believe...(1 From Modem to Router, 1 From Router to Computer 2 (XP) and 1 From Router to Computer 1 (98)....The modem had 5 Ethernet ports in the back labelled... WAN, 4,3,2,1. I dont know why but when I hook up everything I dont get internet on either computer...Does anyone know why this is happening. I do not think I have ethernet drives on my old pc (98) But I dont know if that matters...Can someone please tell me the right order to plug in the cords and what drivers I may need to run both computers on my DSL connection?

Thanks Alot For Any Help,

If any more information is needed just ask!

Thank You! :upset:

Welcome :)

Did you follow the instructions of the router?

You need to plug the modem into the WAN Port.

You may then have to reboot the PC and Reset the Router and Modem.

You then need to see if you PC is getting an IP Address from the Router.
If so, you then need to access the Router Config and see if it is getting the IP from the Modem.

When I hooked it up the way you told me (1 Ethernet from Modem to Router, 1 Ethernet from Router To Computer 2 (XP) and 1 USB From Modem to Computer 1) I get the internet on the Windows 98 one....The one that I have the modem and the router hooked up 2. But i dont get it on the second computer...I get a message when I try and get the connection on XP.... (Connecting Through WAN Miniport PPPOE) but it goes no farther. How do I config the ips?

Thanks,

Hey Again,

I just ran a scan on my 98 computer and it says it is missing a Network Adapter and a TCPIP Stack....I have no clue what these are...All I know is that the 98 computer has an Ethernet port on the back and thats the only cable going into that pc from the router. I dont know whats going on and I am getting quite frustrated...Are these drivers I need to download? If so where can I get these drivers/adapters!!!!

Thanks:disgust:

Iceman start again.. work on this Keep it Simple Stuped (KISS)

1. Router is it a DSL Router IE built in B/B Modem if so you dont need the Modem.
2. Your Modem has 5 LAN Port and B/B is that Correct or it it just a Modem?

Try this setup

1. Connect Pc 1 to Router
2. Connect Pc 2 to Router

Can they see each other.? is the Router pumpiong out IP Address.? do a IP Config and let me know the addreess. Once you have the two comp[uter seeing each other then connect the Modem. Note the Modem will also have a IP Address and a common fault is that the Router and Modem have the same one 192.168.0.1 and the Router is acting as a DHCP so that kick out the modem. Once you have two computer talking and the IP address you should be able to configure your Router and change the range from 192.168.0.1 ????? what ever to 192.168.10.10 then connect the modem to the router and let them bridge.

Ehat that means is that your Computer 1 - 192.168.10.11 with a gateway of 192.168.0.1 = modem

get a little confusing... if you in the uk call my tech support free on 01282 422245 or 07974 709833.
