direct x problem

I tried to install Sound Forge 6 on my pc - during the install I was told that I needed direct x 8 runtime to proceed any further. The problem here is that I had direct x 8 on my system prior to the install. I checked dxdiag to see whether I could identify any problems, but all seemed to be in order. I then decided that maybe if I were to install direct x 9 runtime, it would sort the problem out - no such luck!

Any advice on why this is happening and what I can do to sort it out would be most appreciated!
