Here is the small question I have. I might just need to test it out to see if it works; I know this. I don't think this would work but I'm not all that sure. My situation is this:
In May my friend went to Navy bootcamp and was going to be gone for roughly a year total before he went to his first permenant base. He said during this time that I could use his computer. Recently my parents decided to FINALLY get broadband and join the other 3 billion people who have it already. The dilema is that having our house the way it is, it bars us the ability to network via conventional ethernet networking. So I decided that the only other option to moving all the computer to the same floor of the house would be to get wireless. I've done my homework and have learned a lot about wireless. I realize everyone has their opinions on wireless (hate it or like it) but I just want to try this first before I give up my sweet computer set up. Question I have is that me and my friend's computer both have the same motherboard with onboard LAN. Could I get a wireless card to connect to our wireless home network and allow his computer access to the network/internet via my computer's wireless connection and a cross-over cable? Or would I have to set up my computer like a gateway? Just a side note, I have a hub and 2 cat5's sharing my dial-up to his computer so I have the components needed to make my computer a gateway for his, just not sure how the network would work with wireless seeing as how I'm brand new to the whole wireless thing. Thanks for your time to read this and any inputs anyone has. |

I am out of it right now so not sure exactly what you are wanting to do, but the simple answer is just get a wireless router and a wireless card for each computers. This will prevent confusing setup problems when trying the setup you are talking about. Make sure you get the 802.11g

When are you getting the broadband connection? Already have it? Weather you go DSL or cable modem locate the cable modem to the PC that is desired. I assume this is neither yours or your friends machine, but probably your parents machine. Then do as renegade600 suggests. The PC with router and modem will be a hardwired setup. Then install either a PCI or wireless usb 2.0 adapter to the other PC's. Install as per manufacturers instructions. Note do yourself a big favor and if you go Netgear, D-link, Linksys, Microsoft, whatever....implement that manufacterer adapters to reduce complications. Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, I suggest to let the router handle dhcp and not assign static IP's. (My 2 cents on this last.)
