My husband is trying to set up two pcs with ntl broadband. His pc (downstairs ) is working fine on broadband. He bought cable to take to our sons pc upstairs. He has fitted the cable and the router is indicating that the router is reaching our sons pc fine. The trouble is he hasn't got a clue how to configure the pc upstairs to work with the cable broadband. Can anyone tell us in easy steps how to set up the 2nd pc please?
Thanks

Well as it so happens I am contemplating setting up an old PC with 98se to be my internet host computer. I know how mine will be set up and have a feeling that yours may be about the same. Also you may be able to help me at the same time. Anyways, here goes, hope this helps.....
If your broadband requires the use of a Ethernet (netcard) adapter then you will need to have two of them in the HOST computer. One for the broadband and one for the home network. (you probably have already done this, but just in case I included it)
The downstairs computer or host computer will have to be set up to SHARE the internet connection with others on the home network. This normally is accomplished by making a selection in the network properties.
The upstairs computer will need to have Internet Explorer set up to access the internet through a LAN. This can be accomplished by running the IE connection setup wizard.
NOW HERE IS THE POSSIBLE PROBLEM.....
XP has a problem sharing an internet connection using PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet). I have not heard of or seen any reports of 98 having a similar problem. That is the reason I am thinking about creating a 98 host myself.
Do you know if your broadband uses PPPoE?

OK Forget all the junk and wannabee.... Do you have a Router or are you sharing via the computer?
Setup your Computer Like so.. For a Computer Shared B/Band
Down Stairs PC (PC1 = XP)
Connect to B/Band and click on the Network and share the connection, this should give it and IP Address as follows
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0
Up Stairs PC (PC2)
Connect the two computer using a Cross Over Cable
Set the LAN TCPIP as follows
IP 192.168.0.2
Submask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS = Enabled
DNS Name = PC2
DNS Host = My_PC
DNS IP = 192.168.0.1
DNS AIP = 213.1.119.102 (Bt DNS)
That should work, set the Iexplore to LAN Connection and your away. If both computers are Windows 98 use Vsocks Lite as a proxey Server.
On a Router Configuration it should be simple set the router up as a DHCP so that all IP address are pumped out from this so your network will look like this
Router
IP 192.168.1.1
Submask 255.255.255.0
DHCP Range
Start 192.168.1.1
Finish 192.168.1.254
PC1
IP 192.168.1.2
Submask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS 192.168.1.1
As above for PC2 except IP will be 192.168.1.3 and so one. just set the lan IP to obtain automaticlly and the router will do all the work. to check use the command ipconfig /all or winipcfg this will tell you all you need to know.
Best of Luck

I guess I could re-write what others have already said, but I need to know what versions of Windows you are running, and what make and model is that Router?
Internet<---->Cable Modem<----->Router<----->PC1,
<----->PC2.
