I have acquired a laptop, Win95, with no CD drive, and thus want to network it to my PC.

The stumbling block I've come across is the lack of the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop.

Can anyone advise me to how to install it, or direct me to the information?

The Windows CD is in zip form on the hard disk.

It seems to be a lot easier to find advice on how to get rid of it.

Hi there,

This is a question that will take a considerable amount of explination. So for now you can head on over to Linksys' web site. They have a wealth of info for first time users and advanced relative to LAN's and sharing a cable or DSL service. www.linksys.com (http://www.linksys.com) and click on Support, then FAQ's. When done with that look around on their site, there is other valuable info.

Thanks junky, although I didn't yet see the answer to my problem at linksys.

Credit where credits due..... http://www.ctlow.ca/HomeNetwork/SmallNetwork.html helped me out big time when I first networked a couple of comps, that time everything went smoothly.

He hit the same stumbling block, though, as I have this time, the missing network neighbourhood icon on the desktop. His solution seemed to involve TweakUi and a link to "Helmut" who, like many others, seemed more adept at removing the thing.

Am I missing something obvious here? Does it magically appear when I add a protocol, or something?

Forgive me if I'm being retarded over this one.

Update, when I reboot the laptop, I get a....

Unable to load the dynamic link library:

msnp32.dll

The system cannot find the file specified.

Some or all of the following feature is not available:

Microsoft Network.

........

I guess there's a large chance that this has something to do with my problem.

I've tried throwing the offending .dll on a floppy (from WIN98) and installing it in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory, but it hasn't helped.

This is costing me a lot more time than I would ever have imagined.

Problem sorted, I had to add/remove a few of the clients. The fault is still there on boot up, but the network neighbourhood icon has appeared.

Am I talking to myself here?

I hear, or is that see, ya.

It's been awhile, but I think if you go in to Device Manager and remove everything in Network adapter, then reboot and reinstall them it will create the icon. You'll have to setup Network Neighborhood all over again again doing it that way. I'm not sure on this method, but it should clear out what ever is making that error pop up.

Sorry I'm no better at this. Any time I have a problem like you discribe, I fiddle around with Windows until I figure it out. I think it's just a nack that I've aquired from years of messing around with computers. I'm really not that good, I just keep at it until I fix it, or I wipe Windows of the face of the planet and reinstall it. :D I'm pretty good at installing windows.
