I have an old computer, running Win98se, that I need to transfer information off. It will only boot in safe mode and I cannot use the CD-ROM. Not even detected in "My Computer", so I can't use the Win98 CD to repair any missing files.

Any ideas?

Hi wallyp

If you want to try and repair the OS
by installing Win98 over its self, do this.
This should leave your programs and files intact.

With the Windows 98 installation CD in the drive,
start the computer with a Win98 boot disk.
From the "Windows 98 Startup Menu" select,
"Start computer with CD-ROM support."

When you receive the A:\> prompt type
these lines. Press Enter after each line.
(x: represents your cd-rom drive letter.
The CD-Rom drive letter usually moves up a letter, ie D becomes E, E would become F and so on.)

c:
mkdir win98
x:
cd\win98
copy *.* c:\win98

After the files are copied, type these lines and press Enter after each.

c:
cd\win98
setup

This will start the Windows installation.
Just follow the prompts.
When asked, "Do you want Setup to save your existing system files,
incase you decide to uninstall Windows 98?"
select NO and press next. Follow the prompts to
complete the installation.
