I'm also having the same problems. Called AOL. They had me delete internet explorer under Add/Remove, still couldn't fix it, and then they told me to call HP to get some help, but HP won't help unless I pay a fee. Couldn't ascess HP's website either, nor Windows update. I posted in an earlier log, but didn't really get any help. Also I have been reading the other logs, have tried a few things that were posted there, including Spybot Search & Destroy, and Hijack This. The HijackThis log is as follows:

Hi Eboneyedk, do you use a proxy to surf? Try unchecking "Use a proxy server" in Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Setttings/LAN Settings and see if it helps.

Hi Anne Marie...did what you said about unchecking proxy settings, still can't get in. Also, how do I reload internet explorer back on my computer. It seems that when I was troubleshooting with AOL, they had me to delete it off my computer as I previously stated in my post. I can go to the Microsoft page, but can't run windows update or download anything. Also, tried to put a cd in one of my cd rom drives, and there is nothing there. Both my cd rom drives are missing. The software for them was loaded already with the system when I purchased it.

I truly appreciate all of your help, but I am having major problems here and need this computer run in tip top shape because I am taking some internet courses online, which uses a class and bood cd for the courses. I'm afraid that I might have to reformat my hard drive and loose all of my programs and info.

Please help me!

Hi Eboneyedk, you can download IE6 SP1 from here (http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/). If you still have problem reaching Windows Updates, work your way through the steps in the Windows Update Troubleshooter here (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/). Post back and let us know how you got on.

Post your problem regarding your CD Rom drives in the Windows Millenium Forum.

Hi AnnMarie, IE6 SP1 is downloading as we speak. Hopefully it will load once the download is complete. As to the Windows Updates, I attempted to work my way through through on the Troubleshooter, downloaded the iuctl.cab file as instructed and got the following message as I was attempting to load WindowsUpdate:

Windows Update Error

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. Network problems are preventing connection to the Windows Update servers. Please try again later.

If you continue to see this error, contact your network administrator.

Hi Eboneyedk, try Windows Updates again after you have installed IE6 SP1 and rebooted.

Hi Eboneyedk, try Windows Updates again after you have installed IE6 SP1 and rebooted.

Hi Ann Marie. I will try Windows Updates again after explorer have downloaded. It is such a huge file (77.5 MB), and I only have dialup. Is it suppose to be such an enormous file? Or am I downloading the wrong one. Remember also that when I called AOL, they had me to delete IE, and then couldn't help me fix it, now it's not showing up anywhere on my computer. So maybe everything about explorer has to install again. ?) But I'm just curious...is the file suppose to be that huge?

Once again, I appreciate all of your help. You have been (and will continue to be) a life saver. Thanks again!

Yes it is a big file and you have the correct download. Once you have downloaded it, if you have a CDRW, burn it to disk before you install it so if you need to reinstall IE again at any time, you will not have to download it again.

Once downloaded, close all open programs and doubleclick on the downloaded file to start the installation. Reboot afterwards.

Hi there again. Thanks for responding so quickly. Remember that I stated in a previous post that neither of my 2 CD drives is showing up on my computer. One is a burner, but I don't have ascess to it. (Still trying to fix that problem to). But, I do have another computer, (an older one), that has a burner on it. I will check it out tomorrow to see if I can burn it.

Also, did you read my HijackThis log I posted earlier? Is there anything in there that I need to adjust?

Thanks again. Hopefully everything will work out fine.

Yes I did check your log and it looks OK but I would like to tidy it up a bit after you have installed IE. So post a new log after the installation.

Sorry, I forgot about your CD Drives. :(

Good evening AnnMarie. Well, IE 6 finished loading, went to open it and nothing was there. So went back online to try to download it again, and it won't download. I don't know what the problem is, but I'm frustrated over this whole computer problem.

So any new ideas...I'm open for them.

Awww, after all that time downloading. :(

How long have you had these problems? Have you tried a System Restore?

Yep, after all that time downloading :( :( :( :(
As to how long I have had these problems, well...they started about 3 weeks ago. Computer was working fine, went to Windows Update...update some stuff, maybe a couple of days after that, tried to ascess secure sites...and started getting "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error messages. So, I don't know what the problem is, but do you think it would be wise to format the hard drive, reinstall Windows ME, or something else. I'm at an empass here as to what to do.

Thanks in advance for all you help! I really do appreciate it.

Let's try a System Restore if you havent already tried this. You will not lose any data but any software or hardware installed after the date you choose will have to be reinstalled.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and then click System Restore.

Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next. A calendar will appear. Choose a date when you know that everything was working well and click Next and follow the prompts. Your PC will gather the required information and then you will be prompted to reboot.

Let us know if this helped.

Hi AnnMarie. Well, since I spoke with you last, I have tried a few things of my own. When I purchased my computer, a set of System Recovery Disks, and a Application Recovery Disk came with my computer. So...I inserted Disk I, rebooted my system and the recovery began. Although some programs (my printer, etc.), were lost and I have to reinstall them (of which most I burned to CD or have the original CD for), but as we speak, Windows Update is downloading the necessary files that I need. And also, I am able to get back on secure websites and that oh so dreadful, "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message has disappeared! Hallelujah! The only think I am still having problems with is my Sony CD Burner and my regular CD drive. I used the Recovery disks to recover things, but now they are not showing up under my computer. But, I will post that problem elsewhere.

Thank you for all your help. You are wonderful!

P.S. After everything has updated from Windows Update, I will post another HijackThis log for you to check out. Talk soon.

Hi Eboneyedk, sometimes it's best to make a fresh start. :)

Yes, do post a log although I'm sure it will be fine.

Regarding your drives, can you see them in Device Manager? As you said, it really would be better to post a new topic regarding this problem but do include the above info. :)

Hi AnnMarie...well, since we spoke last, figured out my cd rom problems, and all is well. Anyway, I'm posting the HijackThis log as promised. Is there anything there that I need to remove? Also, windows finished updating. I wanted to ask you, should I update to IE 6 SP1? With all of the recent problems that has come up about it, I'm kind of leery about downloading it. It was in my critical update list at the Microsoft page. Well, let me know.

Thanks for all your help ^(*:*)^ Here goes with the log:

Hi Eboneyedk, your log looks fine but it also looks as though you havent rebooted after a download or update.

Yes, definitely install IE6 SP1. You need to make sure that you have all critical updates in place.

BTW, how did you fix your CD Rom problem? I'm curious now. :D
