I have been trying to set up a simple wired internet sharing network for my two computers at home. One uses XP and the other uses Win 98. I have followed all the instructions that are given on Win XP for doing this but can't get the two computers to communicate and share the connection. Does anyone know if what I am trying to do actually works at all and if so are there any hints? I feel that I must be missing something.

Thanks

Hi

I am trying to share a broadband connection - this is connected to the XP computer via cable modem. I do have McAfee firewall but I have changed the settings to allow the share.

I forgot to ask, do you have a router?

Sorry, I should have said - no router, I am trying to do it just by connecting the two ethernet cards as win XP says can be done. The broadband connection is via USB to the modem. I have used crossover cable and have also tried an ethernet switch.

I strongly advise using a router for security reasons. The use of a crossover cable will result in data errors, loss of connectivity, or the network may not work at all. Besides, depending upon your tos, the cable company will be able to see both connections and could charge you for the extra connection.

Anyway, see this (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/qa/qa20030213.shtml) maybe it will help.
