I am setting up a simple network comprising of:
1 X Laptop (Win xp)
1 X Server (Win xp, Oracle 9i app server, Oracle 9i database)

All I want is to be able to access the server from the client laptop via a simple network or usb cable. However, I don't want to have a seperate Monitor, keyboard etc. for the server, I wan't to just stick the box in a cupboard.

So how do I get a simple peer-to-peer network that allows me to view the server from the laptop i.e. shutdown, install software on the server using the laptop screen, keyboard etc.

Do I set up a simple connection using a or network or USB cable and use some remote control software such as zen works remote control?

Also if i set up a simple connection between the laptop and server using a network cable would the server have a different IP address?

Hope that makes sense.

Greeings,
You can use a direct connection between the server and the Laptop using a Ethernet Crossover cable. Each PC will have a differnet IP addy on the same SubNet Mask.
I use Symantec PC Anywhere to do the same thing over TCP/IP on my network. My servers are in a locked room and I monitor them from my WS in my office.
Depending on teh distance, the USB may not be practical. The above should be the simplest to do. Just make sure you use a Cross over cable.

Good Luck

Ok, so this is probably a really stupid question, but I'm genuinely frustrated~ I'm trying to connect a desktop and a laptop using a cross over cable... apparently i'm forgetting to do something somewhere because I can tell that the cable is ok because both computers are sending and receiving packets... however i get that there is limited or no connectivity when i check the status of the lan connection... also, i can't see either computer on the other computer and i'm seem to want to pull out all of the hair i ever had. I tried sharing the drives that i wanted access to, i tried setting one as a host and one as a guest... i made sure that the LAN connection was enabled... any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Welcome :)
