As we purchase software for our computer, we have to keep an eye on requirements... so, moving from 95 to 98 is the next step. Somehow we wound up with a burned copy. We purchased some CDs at a garage sale or something and in the case we noticed a burned copy of 98 and 2000... I'm just wondering if there is a way for Microsoft to track these sort of things if we were to use it... also, does anyone know where I can get a copy of 98 that's legal? By that I mean still in the box and unused?
Thanks...

Howdy:
First of all, answering question 1 would be assisting with software piracy which isn't allowed here.. Install it and take you chances!!!
As for a legit copy, try Ebay..

That's what I thought... we haven't used it for that reason and others... I guess it'll be a great coaster... haha...
Thanks!

Further to the piracy issue... if one was to purchase an original from eBay that was used, isn't that illegal?

If it was a retail edition and had been removed from the sellers system, then no.. that would be kosher..
If it was an OEM version, unless they sold you the system it came with, that would NOT be kosher..

I have so much to learn..
So, if it was installed by someone, other than the manufacturerm, that's cool? But, if it was a copy of what was in there when the computer was purchased, that's not good?

It is allowed to be used on 1 computer and a backup copy made.
I have bought.sold and traded many cd's,music and pc's.There are stores who do this "legally"
? When does Windows versions become public domain or out of production ?
;)
