View Full Version : Defragging!!!!

Last week I ran a defrag using the Norton version, it took maybe 45 minutes to do it. Today I opened up the Big Fix program, it told me I should run a scan and defrag. I thought what the heck, I can do it today easily enough. I have Windows 98SE here, and stopped everything running, before doing the scan (the Windows version I have here). That took less than 5 minutes, not doing the thorough scan. I then ran the defrag (again, Windows version), and this took almost 3 hours, YIKES!!!
My question is, which is the better defragger of the two, or is there any better ones out there?
Dave.

I sure am getting mouthy here all of a sudden. But actually I'm curious Dave, why your Norton defrag took 45 minutes. Mine only takes about 15 minutes tops. Thats with Norton Utilites. I run it every week, so maybe that might be why it doesn't take that long. But I'd really like to know which is the better one, Norton or Windows too. I read somewhere awhile back that the Norton was far superior to Windows, but I can't remember where.

Well Tami. I guess it all has to do with how much the computer is being used, this hog here is being used very very often. But don't quote me on this, I might be totally wrong here, wouldn't be the first time either!!!

Thank you very much Tram, I've downloaded it, unzipped it, and will give it a go next week. I'd do it today, but have been told not to defrag a machine too often.

Not all defraggers are created equal.
I have seen an in depth discussion on this somewhere (may be Suggestafix, the old CyberTech/EZboard, Tech guys or Virtual Dr, can't recall where).
bottom line was, different software treats file fragmentation differently, so running the bigfix defrag will probably have reversed all the work your Norton defrag did. Running the ME defrag will probably take a while as well if it treats fragmentation differently to BigFix.
Here is a good way to test this theory.
Run one defragger, then immediately run the other. if they both treat fragmentation the same, the second run will be very short.
If the second run takes a while, immediately run the first one again and it will take a while again.

Thank you Smurfy.
As for using the Big Fix program, I didn't go to any defrag program from there, I think it only tells you that you need to run a scan and defrag, I don't think it can actually do it itself.
I shall try your method of running two defrag programs next week, when I get a bit of extra time, don't want to be waiting for hours at the moment!!!

Hey TT, cool trick, ME defrag runs significantly faster http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks a bunch mate http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Now I go, testing running a second instance on the other drive in parallel.

The Me defrag is the way to go if you have windows. I have saved a bunch of time. I have never heard that you should not run defrag to often, has anyone else herd of this. I am on the PC often an run defrag daily. this new defrag has saved me on avg about ten minutes a day. Dave this defrag will finish in less than 15 minutes for ya.
In my case it takes about 10 minutes to defrag 10.9 gigs on this PC and I do run Task Scheduler.
Herb you are welcome, god knows that I have taken a lot from your site. Now if you could just send some Becks. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
