I'm trying to fix my dad's problem that he has with his scanner. I'm not sure the kind I can't remeber what kind. I know that he is running windows 98 SE and he has a P III. The scanner is hooked up via USB port. He says that the scanner hasn't been working since his friend changed his modem about a few months ago. The programs needed to run the scanner are intact but the scanner comes up disabled in his systray. I checked the device manager and it comes up as not working. So I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them and nothing works still. It still says the same thing that there is a problem with the scanner. Could it be his USB cable? or the USB port or the scanner itself? He has two USB ports and one is hooked up with his printer which works totally fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try putting it in your computer and seeing if it works there.

What do you mean? Just installing the software in the computer and not having the scannere hooked up? Or adding the scanner thru add new hardware???

I'm assuming you use a different computer than your dad. Try hooking up the scanner to the computer its not normally hooked up on to see if the physical scanner is the problem.

Any chance the 2nd USB port has his modem connected to it?
