Hi,
I just joined this forum to post some questions about OS upgrade. From apple.com website, I have downloaded the OS 9.1 update and tried to install it on my iBook which currently operates on OS 9.0.4. However, I was stopped at the begining of this procedure with the message saying that "Mac OS 9.1 must be installed from the CD when Language Kit files are already installed." So, I asked one of the retailers of Mac software if I really have to get a retail 9.1 CD to upgrade my OS with Language Kit. The answer was yes. They say that: There is a fundamental change in Language Kit versions - OS 9.0.4 and earlier use one version; OS 9.1 and later use a newer version. The older version is not compatible with OS 9.1 and later. However, while googling I also found a conflicting statement made by "mactraveler" at this forum (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...p/t-36822.html). S/he said that s/he removed the Japanese language kit, which was installed on the computer, before upgrading to OS 9.1. After upgrading to OS 9.2.2, s/he then reinstalled the Japanese language kit from the OS 9.0.4 CD. If there is really a compatibility problem between the old and new versions of the Kit, how come s/he was able to do it? Or the Mac vendor is wrong? I thought of asking anyone who is familiar with this issue, before placing an order for the retail CD. Thank you for your advise. Mayumi

Hi Mayumi,
If I were you I would try doing exactly as Mactraveler did, backup any important data first. If it does not work for you then at that time you could buy OS 9.21. HTH. Jim. |
