Smile Monitor Shuts off

Am not sure where this question belongs but will start here. When I turn on my computer, my monitor will not come on and if I turn it off and then on, it goes right into sleep mode and shuts off.. I tried a different monitor and that one shuts off too. Where do I start to fix this? I am fairly sure it is not the monitor.

I have a AMD Athlon 1800 with 1 gig of memory and plenty of hard drive space. I am running Windows XP Pro.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Rae

Monitor shuts off

If I could see what was on the monitor I could go into the bios and change the settings, but the monitor goes into sleep mode as soon as the computer boots up, so nothing will show up on the monitor. Could it be my video card? I have a ATI Radeon that is only a couple of years old.

Tapping the F8 key as your PC boots will get you into BIOS before the shell loads. However, I'm not sure what you can change in there to fix your problem.

My problem is that if nothing shows on the monitor so I can't see what to change.. I am pretty sure I can turn off the power saver mode there, if I could just read the screen.
Is there a possibility that it is my video card? I never have had one fail, but there is always a first time.

Thanks for your reply.

Well, if you've got a vid card go into your BIOS and enable on-board graphics (see if you can disable the card).

I decided that maybe my problem was the video card, so got an old video card and put it in and it works. So my video card must be bad and it was not that old either and the one I am using is an old one..
