This morning I tried to defragment my wife's computer. I cleared out the task bar, opened up the program and clicked to "end it all", everything closed, or so I thought. I then ran a disk scan, and started doing the defrag' using the new Windows ME defrag program. It got up to 10%, then started over again, the little message at the bottom told me that something running had interupted the defrag (or words to that effect). SO it starts going through all its first procedures. This time it got up to 12%, before the same problem happened!! I let this go on for about an hour, letting it build up it's defrag by a couple of percentages each time. Then I finally got fed up with it, closed the defrag down, and I did the ctrl/alt/delete trick, only to find that my AV program, and Zone Alarm was still working!!
Any ideas as to why End It All, didn't end it all???
All answers will be muchly appreciated.
Dave.

Zone Alarm would not be the problem. The AV is a big problem and reads/write to the disk all the time. I do not use any of these so called helper apps, so I can not tell you what the problem was/is. If you want I can give you a reg hack that will start defrag (once only) on boot up before any other programs load.

Thank you Tram.
I've been running both programs for a while, and have done frequent disk scans and defrags, closing all that is currently running in the task bar, and using "End It All" to close everything. Up untill the other day when I wanted to do the scan disk and defrag, I'd not come accross this problem!

Copy between the -----'s into notepad and give it a name like defrag.reg the .reg is the important part. Then double click the file to merge it with the registry and reboot, defrag will start at boot.
--------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServicesOnce]
@="DEFRAG.EXE /ALL"

Thank you Tram, I might give that a go, although I really don't like messing around with the registry too much, been there done that, goofed up big time!!!
I guess the whole point of my posting the question, was the fact that End It All wasn't actually closing everything down, and I was just curious as to whether anyone else had noticed this.

Dave, I've been using 'End it all' for quite awhile now and at first it would close everything that I left unprotected. But I've noticed lately that it doesn't close my AV at all, it just puts a question mark by it. But it takes the icon off my taskbar and when I go to ctrl/alt/delete its not there. Is it running or not...I don't know. And also, now 'End it all' says it closes Zone Alarm, but like you, its still running. I have no idea whats up with that. Just to let you know your not the only having these things happen with it.
