I installed, that is my husband did! - MS Word yesterday evening. Later last night, I made the letter head format I will need and saved it, and everything looked hunky-dorey. I shut down the computer and went to bed. This morning when I open Word, either that particular file or a new, blank one, after a few seconds it says "Winword" This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
What the heck is this? If anyone can answer I'd be eternally grateful........also I won't be able to check back here till late this evening, please don't consider me rude. Thanks for any help - this I cannot have!
PS: Here's what it says when I click details:

Harrie,
Do you have a Hewlett Packard printer ????
This sounds like a printer driver failiure.
If you do then....
Quit all Microsoft Windows programs.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Hewlett Packard Printer.
Click Add/Remove.
After the printer driver has been removed from your computer, restart your computer.
Reinstall your Hewlett Packard printer driver.
But before doing this did you print anything last night or this morning before the error ???? If this doesn't sound probable please reply http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
What d'ya think ????

Gosh, very interesting response! Yes, I do have an HP printer! Last night, I did print several things to see how my format would come out, and, at that time, it worked and it was fine! But......that sounds awfully good. I have asked this somewhere else too! (Only cuz I'm so worried about it since I have to be running next week). Got an answer about putting in the disc and clicking on repair office. Dang, I wish I could work on this right now but I can't. I will this evening for sure, will try both these fixes/suggestions, see what happens and definitely post back. I appreciate your help a whole, whole bunch - you don't know how much! Thanks, Mishy!

Harrie,
Although rebuilding office "could" fix something like this, it is much more probable that the problem is actually with the printer driver as that is what caused the GPF.
Let us know how it goes mate http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Wow, Mishy, it's times like these one realizes just how important these "help" forums are! I usually just ask in some not urgent case, or even to help with my web page, but this help I needed and hey, it worked! Great instructions, uninstalled with total ease...........now the stupidest part is, I'm still stuck with the other problem I had yesterday, not knowing how my hubby has a disc set up to run! Oh my God, LOL! But, I know your diagnosis had to be correct because now that it's off, I don't get the error anymore. And I need the printer, but not urgently! I feel so stupid that tonight, when my husband comes home, you can be SURE I will ask him how to do it, watch, or do it myself! I would figure you'd go to run? But I get something about regedit or G:sys something or other and I just don't want to fool with it. This will teach me my lesson to know these basic things, for crying out loud! And nobody even need answer how to get the CD-ROM to play, because I don't feel I deserve an answer! Ha! It's the truth. Anyway, I'm rambling on and on and on......thanks again. I wonder is this likely to happen again, though, or I suppose maybe the reinstall will detect Word 2000 and do something differently? I've heard there are a lot of bugs with Word 2000, but I love that e-mail from the document feature! Anyway, it sure is good to know this board is here for these crises! Who wants to start new work and tell the person they can't get their equipment to work, GAH!
Obligated Harrie - and I will post back when the printer software is reinstalled just to be final, but as I said, I can tell that was it because the problem is now gone. Thanks again.

lol That's good to hear Harrie http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
oh I know you said no one need post about how to use the cd-rom but I'm gonna have to now hehehe You're a "Master Tech" here on CTH and what if someone comes to you for help LOL http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Put the CD in the CD-ROM and if it doesn't automatically come up with the setup program, just double click on MyComputer then on the CD-ROM icon which is probably "D:" depending on how many drives you have on your computer.
Then if that brings up a list of whats on the cd instead of the setup program, look for SETUP or INSTALL. If this is for the printer driver/software then you may have to specify which printer you've got because often driver disks contain drivers for a lot of models.

It is very easy to turn on the auto insert notification feature.
Right click My Computer
Choose Properties
Choose Device Manager
Expand CDROM
Highlight the CD player
Click on Properties
Choose Settings
Place the a check in the Auto Insert Notification box
Click OK and OK again
You now will have the CD auto play/begin the install programs
Remove the check to disable this feature.
You can also hold down the Shift key when inserting a CD if you do not want it to auto start.
This reg hack will work if for some reason the Auto Restore does not enable for some reason (often happens). copy between the ------'s and name something like autocd.reg and double click the file to have it added to the registry. Easy
------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=hex:95,00,00,00
-----------
Stand up for your right to have Auto Insert Notification!!

Hehe, some "Master Tech" I am! ((((((((GROAN)))))))))!!! But, you've just taught me one more thing, so, one step at a time, eh? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif Okay, I did that and then of course I went back to Word - still A-OK for the time being. Oh, and then I printed something and I guess I'll check it a few more times tonight to be sure I don't get that error again, and if not, looks like I'm fixed!

Oh Tram, I'm totally out of it! I just saw you there! Yeah, I may have to fight for that right tonight - hehe! Well, hell, I know how to have it both ways now and switch back and forth. Thanks, Tram! I may not be the smartest in the world, but I'm pretty good at absorbing things I'm told about 'puters - at least, compared to some people I know! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Edit: (and I'm shuttin' up after this) :lol Speaking of printers, I'm printing out this whole dang thread just in case, for future reference! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
