I have a problem when playing midi files. It doesn't happen with any other sound files, but whenever a midi file is played on the PC for some reason it sets the volume control at the highest level!! Most annoying it is, can anyone please help???

Dave try to adjust the Synth volume. Use the volume icon in the systray. Double click on it and then hunt around if you don't see Synth listed it's there somewhere that is the midi volume.

Thanks very much Tram, but that is the volume control that always zooms right to the top, when a midi file starts playing, all the others remain as they are!!!

Did you try to adjust it?

Dave, what app are you using to play the files?
Windows Media Player?
Winamp?
Something else?

Windows Media Player has a setting to control volume which will over-ride current Volume control setting when you start it up.

Thank you guy.

Yes Tram I've tried many a time to adjust it, but everytime a midi starts playing, the volume control goes right to full volume!!!

Smurfy, I recently downloaded the new MS media player, that's what plays the midi's (I think!!!) at least midi files is checked as being played by that program. Even before downloading the latest player, I had the same trouble. I just opened up the player, and looked around for any volume controls, but couldn't find anything, not even in properties!!

Ah Dave, I haven't had a chance to have a good look at latest Media Player (the drawback of only having a w95 system to "play" with http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif )

In older Mplayers (6.4), it was View/Options/Audio - there's a slide there that over-rode Windows Vol control.

Dave, just a thought, what sound Hardware are you using?

Does it have it's own config utility that may be setting it's MIDI instrument volume?

Thank you very much Smurfy.

I just played around a bit with the new media player, and although I didn't find what I'd call a volume control (with a slide bar), I found that if I hit the F9 key, it will lower the volume. So far I've played five different midi files, and the volume has remained low, so touching wood, this problem is now fixed!!

Once again, thanks for your help.

I'm now off to find more problems!!! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh no!!! It's started happening again to me, every time I open a site that has a midi file playing, or if I go to a midi files site, and click to hear a sound, the bloody volume shoots right up to "max"!I have no clue as to what has caused this again, but I sure need help with it???

Thanks in advance, my ears are saying thanks too, for any help you can give.

I know the problem http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif
I got fed up by websites with it as well, just as if I need it, while I'm recording precious vinyls http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Ok, fasten seat-belts http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Make a backup of the registry.
Enter the registry and delete any key or value with the word "midi"
Reboot into dos and start a scanreg /fix
Start windows and you've your peace.

If you don't like it, get your backup in place.

Dave, before you start registry hacking, is this only happening from Websites or is it happening when you open a *.mid file on your local hard drive?

If it's just websites, what browser & version?

Thank you very much for your help on this.
I really don't like the idea of messing around with the registry, I've done it before, and it got me into a lot of computer trouble!!!

I've just played a couple of midi's that is on the hard drive, the volume did not shoot right up!! I tried a couple of web pages that play a midi file, the volume did shoot right up to the max'!!! I have IE 5.5, the final version, without the service pack 1!! Also using Windows ME, although the problem was here before I installed that!!

Once again, many thanks.

Dave.

Ok, now were getting somewhere, this is an IE problem, nothing more.
Do you have any other browser installed (Netscape or Opera). Do they give the same problem?

Try IE repair first of all.
