Is there any way of reapairing desktop icons???

I was trying to download some icon and gif programs today, and found that I didn't like some, so I uninstalled them. Now my desktop looks terrible!!! The icons are hal missing, if they're there at all!!! I'v tried deleting the icon shortcuts, and adding the shortcut again, but it doesn't seem to be any better, the new shortcuts are still not there fully??

Any help will be muchly appreciated.

Dave.

Hi there Dave.

If you have TweakUI, it provides a "Rebuild Icons" for one of its options. You can download "MS TweakUI 2000" off www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) and go to Power Tools-Freeware. This will work on Win ME/win9x. Or if you have the win98fe full install CD it's on there, it is not on the win98se CD. If you are running win95 you need to get TweakUI from tucows.

Hope it works for you.

Dave I know with macs,if you use the keyboard method it doesn't necessarily rebuild the desktop file to new ones. What the desktop method does is repair or replace the existing files which if are corrupted in some way,it replaces the corrupted one with *new* corrupted files. Not all the time mind you but...... With macs there are many programs that *delete* the files all together and replace them with new fresh ones.

Junky has the right idea "of course" on using a program. I know zilch about windows other than the fact that I try to avoid cleaning them except maybe my car windows should be washed once a year so I don't hit anyone.... http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Delete "ShellIconCache" from C:\Windows, reboot and see how they look.

Well I've tried everything mentioned here, but it still looks pretty bad!!! I couldn't find the ShellIconCache in Windows, but I have X-Tec Set Up on this machine, and saw two ShellIconCaches there, so deleted them, still it doesn't look any better after a re-boot!!!

OK, let's back up here. Which icons are messed up? The ones for windows or for programs you have installed.

If it's the windows' icons TweakUI should rebuild them. If it's the program icons then why can't you just reinstall the program to have the icons placed on the Desk Top again?

Good luck Dave. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Junky, I think you just hit the nail on the head!!!

The Windows icons do look good, but the AIM, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and other programs icons look terrible!! Would it be okay to install these again, over the original install, or should I uninstall them all first???

Yo Dave,

I don't see why it would mess anything up to reinstall right over the top of the existing installation. It should not delete or overwrite anything, just replace anything that is missing. Just remember to choose the option to place shortcuts on the Desktop, or drag them there. Delete the messed up Desk Top icons first.

But only do one install at a time. Then reboot to let any changes take place. If any reinstall gives you troubles, then uninstall it...then reinstall it. Remember to save any special files and what not first before removing the program.

Well I tried installing Yahoo Messenger over the original one, but the shortcut still doesn't look good!! So what I'll do over the weekend is uninstal it completely, and re-install it, if that works, I'll go ahead with the othe programs.

Thank you Junky.

try this. Right click on the desk top. click properties. Go to the "Effects" tab and check the "Show icons using all possible colors" box.

Thank you Redstone, you're suggestion is certainly leading to some great progress here!! After trying all other options suggested above, and still having the problem, I did try un- installing Yahoo Messenger aand re- installing it, but the "Y" icon was still looking terrible!

So I justt tried your suggestion, only to find the "Show icons using all possible colors" is already checked off. However, I alsso noticed the "Use large icons" was "greyed out", I was able to clear the greyed out, and check off that box, click "apply", and although the icons are huge, they were showing in their full glory!!! I then unchecked that box, clicked "apply" again, and although the icons are still rather large, once again they are looking good. Sso I'm now guessing that if I try to make them smaleer, as I was doing originally, this affects the quality of the icons!! I shall have to "play" around with this over the weekend, and see what more I can do to make the icons smaller. At least I now know I can get them back to normal if needed, albeit a size too large for what I'd like!!!

Thank you very much for all your help guys, I really do appreciate it.

Youy can change the size of your icons in Display Settings / Appearance tab. Depending on your screen res. I suggest 29 or smaller. ÿ
