MP3/WMA splitting?

Does anybody know of a technique/program to seperate the different sounds/instruments/vocals in a WMA/MP3 file?

I'm not sure of the exact terminology but I'm sure you get the gist, say if I wanted to hear the bass or vocals alone?

It's virtually impossible to do these days, especially with compressed music.

ahh, thanks for the quick reply deggs, i thought that may be the case...

just to be sure, how about if the wma file was created non-professionaly? and how did it used to be done "in the good old days"?

old recording had volcals on one channel and instruments on another.

Easy to seperate.
