Hi

The following email originates from BT:

If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that, he
or she is a company engineer, or telling you that they're checking your
mobile line, and you have to press # 90 or #09 or any other number, end
this call immediately without pressing any numbers. There is a fraud
company using a device that once you press 90 or #09 they can access
your "SIM" card and make calls at your expense.

Hi TJ

This is one of those urban myths that has been around for a while. It has no basis in fact as far as mobile phones are concerned, but there could be an element of truth where one of those number combinations gives access to an outside line on a PABX. See http://www.ulrc.com.au/html/report.asp?CaseFile=ULRR0048&Page=1&View=Request&Collection=Partially%20True

Cheers BF

Hi BigFred,
the link you posted, when I click on it I get a new window which tells me the site has been suspended. Is this report available anywhere else?

Jim.

I worked for BT back in the old days of analogue cellphones. This was a real issue that was communicated internally within the company. It was fixed within a few weeks of it being identified. This was at the time where it appeared every student was on the phone scamming games (call boxes being freaked to give free calls etc).
Sadly, the Telco's have sorted this all out, so the same people are now on the spam scams etc.

It has since done the urban legend rounds and is now one of those poxy chain letters that crop up and kids send round and round every few months.

GTG- fax coming in from the recently deposed Nigerian Finance Minister (now where's my bank details..........)
