IMac problem

My IMac that was built April 1999 chimes at startup and then switches itself off after one click.
It has SO-DIMM memory and by the video connctor a small SO-DIMM card I think is the video card?labelled M MT4LG51264KHG-83 Questions.
1. Does the chime and then turn off imply that the AC adaptor isn't working properly?
2. or can it be a faulty HD. I have 2 spare HD's that I can prepare and install if necessary.
HELP.
PS inside it says,Model CR-175-0
Manufactered Apr 99
