View Full Version : Win 98 won't boot up

Every thing was OK until I installed a 3com network card 3C905.
Drivers all loaded OK and then I re booted.
It goes through counting its memory, the windows screen appears and then more writing, then it stops with a flashing curser.
Sometimes it will continue after a period of time, but mostly it won't.
When it does boot up, everything seems OK. I can even network with another PC.
My PC knowledge is just above the novice level.
Any ideas.
PS Maybe just a coincidence but the clock doesn't keep time recently.

Is your clock running slow ? If so, then check your CMOS battery.

You could try uninstalling your 3Com network card and see if that clears up your other problem.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion Wainui. Unfortunately I tried a couple of things last night (booting up and logging it) and since then all my start up settings seems to have gone and my screen resolution has lowered.

When I try to alter the settings and reboot it grinds to a halt. I think I'm in real big trouble. Don't really know what to do next. Every time I touch it I seem to dig myself into a bigger hole. Is a hard drive format and a reload of windows the order of the day?

Give this a try. Restart your PC, when the first screen appears start tapping the F8 key (CTRL key if F8 doesn't work). This will get you to a Startup menu. Choose Command prompt only. When you get to the C: prompt type scanreg /restore Make sure to leave a space between the g and /

Choose a date prior to you installing the 3com drivers. After it has restored, restart the machine.

Hi Dodge.
Have messed with the thing over the weekend and I got it back and running.
It still takes a long time to start up - but I think I can live with that for the time being.
I haven't tried your suggestion yet but maybe I will it it goes pear shape again. Thanks for making me aware of the F8 thingy.
