I noticed that there are start-up programs with icons on the bottom right hand screen. I wanted to improve my performance so I got rid of them by using msconfig - start up by unchecking the boxes next to the program. Does Windows open them and keep them running in the background even though they don't show as an icon? Also I uninstalled some the programs and they are still listed in the msconfig start-up. They are also unchecked and there is no icon to them showing up. How do I get rid of the uninstalled programs that are still in msconfig start-up?

Thanks,
Pat

MSCONFIG does not remove items from the list even if they have been unchecked.

You may want to look into these programs
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45207

They will let you delete those items from the list.

If an item is unchecked then it should not load at startup.
Bear in mine though that some programs that do load will not show an item in the systray.

You can check what is running by using CTRL+ALT+DEL to show the Task Manager or use a program to show your running programs.

Checkout Startup List

Degsy....hello,

Found your thread and site here from a Google.com search...

Specifically, which of the programs at:

Startup Monitor/Inspectors

will allow me to removed unchecked items from Start> msconfig> Startup items...?

I see there are serveral listed, but need one specifically to cleanup and remove the unchecked items listed under the startup tab.

Appreciate your advice and assistance much!

Welcome :)

StartupCPL will do it.
It's what I use in conjunction with Startup Monitor.
