I have recently upgraded my laptop from Win98 to 98se. Following the upgrade, I downloaded and installed the recommended MS Updates using Windows Update.

1. I can no longer log into the Windows update site, unless I change the URL from http: to https: Then it works. This is a very small problem, but I am wondering if it might be related to #2, which is very annoying..

2. Whenever I attempt to access a secure web site, like my bank, or credit card company, I get a security alert (sometimes multiple security alerts.) I have tried viewing and installing the certificates, but it doesn't help. I have compared the security settings in IE with my desktop, which does not have the problem (same IE6, but WinMe) and they seem the same???

In browsing the internet, these both seem to be known problems, but I haven't been able to find anything to fix them. This laptop will be my only computer for the next four months, while I am away from home, and I would really like to fix this annoyance..

I can't handle all these probs but I do know when I over install W98,
it always puts the wrong Windows Manager file in. Luckily I have 2 more places that wupdmge.exe is kept. Make sure your version is 5.00.1788.1 for correct redirection to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

On the security issues, it seems like it could be an IE security setting.
Try defaulting all zones or at least the security zone.

I hope this helps a little.

I checked both of the things you mentioned, and they looked ok.. Since everything I had tried was a failure, I decided, "what the hay," and went to the MS download site, and downloaded the latest version of IE6, and installed it over my already installed version. Presto!! all of the problems were solved.. Now, of course, Microsoft is prompting me to install the latest security updates, which is where I went wrong in the first place... Think I'll pass on that for now..

Thanks again for your suggestions:wave:

Don't blame you. I went for years without updating and had no probs at all.
Then this free CD with all the updates became available amd gave it a shot.
It did not mess up as much as I thought it would but it did some damages.
Fixed most but still have a few annoying glitches I can live with.
Good luck and glad you got it up and running.
