TH esimple answer is....there ain't a simple answer!!!!!

No one product does it all (as I think most of us have suddenbly realized at some point in the last few years when our pride and joy turns to putty :-( )

You've just got to find a combination of tools that suits your habits.

For me, it's Norton Internet Professional used in conjunction with CWShredder, Ad-aware SE and Spybot.

Cheers.

BTW, welcome to CTH

responding to your original post prompted me into doing a scan on my main pc at home. Cwshredder prompted me to download another tool, Spysubtract.

Cwshredder has now been integrated into this suite. I ran it and it picked up about 70 threats that Norton missed.
Admittedly, I hadn't run Spybot or AdAwareSE in the intervening period, so they would MOST likely have picked them up.

If you want to review it, here is the homepage for it Spysubtract page Worth
a look.

Personally I use nortons but I will also use an online scan for a second opinion. Usually it's the RAV free online scan.

Personally I despise Nortons and McAfee. They screw up more systems than any other Antivirus.

I highly recomend Etrust and Panda. Both are very easy on the system resources and work great. To me Panda is the best though. Right now they are offering a free Year of service also. It includes their Firewall which seems to work great and doesn't kill your Internet speeds either. Panda's free year of service And NO you dont have to be an IT pro either. Just fill out the information.

Thanks Dodge, I will give them both a try (I'll be building a laptop over the weekend, so an ideal opportunity).

Cheers everyone

i use AVG and somtime avast!, along witht he standard spyware tools (ad-aware, SB S&D, and hijack this) panda is also a good option, i would recommend againts norton/mcafee, they are viruses (not litterally) they are waaay too user friendly and they end up messing up stuff

I agree.

Etrust (Computer Associates) and Panda both have free online scanners.

Etrust = http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Panda = http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

If you have Windows XP SP2 installed you will have to change a setting
so your computer will be able to download the Java Applet both sites
need to install so your computer will be able to be scanned. To do that...

In Internet Explorer's menu
Tools
Internet Options...
Security(tab)
Custom Level...(button)

Right at the top...ActiveX controls and plug-ins...enable that.
