I have no idea how or why this happens, but whenever I try to open up a file using windows media player, I get the error message "no combination of filters could be found to render the stream."
Anyone have an idea on how to remedy this?

You are probably trying to stream an *.rm/*.ram file.
You need RealPlayer (http://www.real.com/realone/trial.html?dc=122312221221&src=011214realhome_1,rcahome,011210r1choice_h2,dcn one,011221r1choice_h1).

Nope, I'm talking about .avi files. I installed divx and whatever other codecs were necassary.

I assume your talking about smr patch codec and divX 3.11 alpha
codec. DivX 4.11 codec is available as of the 17 of December.
You need to play those movies in WMP 6.4
Although there are numerous divX players around only WMP v6.4
and BSPlayer v0.834 (http://www.bsplayer.org/)
really handle all the compressions and codecs.
